Precast: King in Queens?

A New York City subway extension project in the borough of Queens called for precast cover slabs installed by Brooklyn contractor Laquila Construction. Here, Laquila owner Tony Amoia and workers put in slabs measuring 5-ft. wide Yen 10-ft. long and 12-in. thick. Each slab has a channel at the end for welding to the temporary steel cross beams, and was cast with mild steel reinforcing and 4,000 psi concrete with a broom finish for traffic.
